Hi there! I'm John and I'm a Graphic Designer seeking exciting new Design opportunities.
A lifelong passionate Artist, Design appealed to me for its creative avenues in visual problem solving, colour theory and creating aesthetically pleasing work.
My background as a Solicitor has given me a wealth of client relation skills and experience working under time pressured deadlines.
Please enjoy my portfolio and don't hesitate to contact me should you require any further information. Thanks!

Social Media
Using InDesign, I created this sample post for HSF Belfast. This is for the purpose of promoting brand success within the firm.
Motion Graphics
Using Adobe After Effects, I have developed the original good luck message I created for Herbert Smith Freehills, Belfast into an animation piece.
UX/UI Design
This is an example of my approach to creating an effective mobile application that enables an easy user experience and adheres to effective visual hierarchy principles.

Photo Editing
Using my DSLR and flash gun, I was able to photograph falling water droplets. I then sharpened the finished piece using Photoshop to adjust the levels and apply smart filters for enhancing the water droplets.
I successfully sold this piece as a private commission.

T Shirt Design
I replied to an open call on social media offering designers to submit their ideas for She Sells Sanctuary's Winter wear, 2020.
Inspired by Autumnal leaves and the symbol of femininity, I created this vector image using Adobe Illustrator.
I was delighted to learn that the t shirts sold out within a week!

Ideas
Brainstorming is an effective tool for design thinking. It generates ideas for all methods of visual problem solving.
In the above example, I tasked myself with creating a logo for a Thai massage company. For this stage, I like working with pen and paper because sketching and scribbling down ideas allows for more creativity than the confines of a computer.

Logo
Logo perfection is not achieved when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Simplicity is key.
Following from my last brainstorming example, I created this logo.
In Thai culture, the Lotus flower is a symbol of purity, faithfulness and spiritual awakening. The circles represent unity, protection and completeness.
The reflective gradient gives the impression of balance and still water, all of which contribute to the soothing effect that a massage parlour would strive to achieve.
My chosen typeface, 'Comfortaa', with its smooth edges gives the impression of comfort and relaxation.

Mockup
It is always useful for a client to have a full visual understanding of what their logo will look like when placed on marketable items.
Following my corporate logo design, I Photoshopped Smart Objects to mockup templates for the illusion of their cosmetic products being branded with their logo.
The templates for this mockup were downloaded from www.mockuptree.com.

Coffee Shop Logo
For this challenge, I thought it would be interesting to come up with a coffee shop logo. I wanted the logo to have a universal feel and to be a leader in the industry. Eventually I arrived at the conclusion of royalty with a bold, minimalist feel.
Creating the crown for this logo was a valuable exercise in the creative use of Adobe Illustrator tools and vector artwork.
The bold typeface and dark grey background provides confidence and inspires leadership.

Coffee Shop Flyer
To complement the coffee shop logo, I wanted to design an effective method of communication that would look cool and be consistent with the theme of royalty.
Following the works-every-time layout, I was able to strike a perfect balance of type, visuals and negative space in this flyer.
Each heading has a decorative font for a more captivating read and the dark brown colour theme is consistent with that of coffee.

Card
A Designer should be a master of using the pen tool.
For me, my training involved cutting and creating paths on Photoshop to create this Letter Design.
Autumn is my favourite season because it is associated with rich, warm colours and a crisp, refreshing feel. So I decided to create my own customised season's greetings card with these feelings in mind.

Type
Designing with type is one of my favourite challenges. It can be the very essence of visual communication.
I wanted to convey the message that Design can influence the future so I chose this quote by Robert L. Peters.
To keep it interesting, I chose different san serif typefaces for a modern more effective style of communication.
The colour blue represents intellectual reflection, yellow is for inspiring creativity and purple is to convey imagination and dreams.
I felt that the script typeface gave it a sense of uniqueness.

Low Poly Art
Formerly basic computer based 3D graphics, today Low Poly Art is a stylized feature in Design.
I'm drawn to Low Poly Art because of its sharp features and contrasting colours that create an illusion of depth.
This piece is personal to me because it is on display in the Ulster Museum, Belfast as part of the Royal Ulster Academy's 139th exhibition. It is also personal to me because the subject is my Labrador, Luna!

Poster
Two images, one frame - Double Exposure creates a wonderful, mystical effect that can be used in a variety of ways to communicate a message.
I chose to credit healthcare staff globally who put themselves at risk everyday fighting Covid-19.
The original traffic shot image is from my own long exposure photography collection.
